McCann fakes Benetton ad

Jill Miller has exposed ( in a manner of speaking) McCann Erickson for coming up with a fake ad for Benetton on the issue of domestic violence.

The model is South Asian and the photographer, Jatin Kampani, and copywriter, Denzil Machado, are both Indians. Did it emanate from the McCann India office? In fact this site credits the ad in question to McCann India.

Here is a letter to Jill from Benetton's PR manager.

Dear Jill,

Thank you for you email. I would like to inform you that the images you
are refering to with the logo "Domestic Colors of Violence" are a FAKE and
are NOT an adverting campaign of Benetton Group.

The ONLY project Benetton has done on domestic violence was in 2003,
created and developed by Fabrica (Benetton's communication research center)
and Colors Magazine (part of the publishing activities at Fabrica). Please
see the attached link for further information
http://www.benetton.com/colorspress/56/.

Thank you for contacting us.

Best regards.

Sunil - Thanks for the link and post. Just one minor correction that you make in the post: I have no idea who did the photos/ads and have never spoken with or been in touch with McCann - so I don't know their role and I don't know if they had a role.

I tried to find contact info for them but...they don't represent Benetton!! Benetton does its ads internally, according to Anissa Nouhi, whose email to me you posted (which was fine!!).

So - McCann hasn't said anything, that I know of, about the ad.

I did also try to track down Denzl Machado and came up with nothing more than the fact that he's won some Clio awards. Whether he's actually with this series of photos or not, I have no idea.

Since you're kind of in the industry, maybe you can break the secret open even more!

Thanks.

Hi Jill,
This ad in all likelihood comes from McCann India given that the photographer and Denzil Machado are from India for sure.

Maybe you should email McCann's head office in the US to dig more.

These ghost ads are cooked up mainly to win awards.
Best,

Sunil
